Sanibel and Captiva are a bird-lovers paradise because our islands are a haven to over 245 species of birds, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the scene. While the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve and Refuge is the hottest hangout for the islands most sought after birds, many different types of shore birds can be seen simply walking down the beach.

Several bald eagles have real estate here and can be seen flying around the islands. You’ll have to go to Ding Darling to see the Roseate spoonbills who always look pretty in their pink. The ibis and pelicans are plentiful and their somewhat humorous appearance will make you smile. The herons and egrets are far more distinguished and, while a little haughty, are always fun to see.

So come hangout with the real birds of Sanibel and Captiva – there’s never a dull moment!
